The Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, Michael Falzon, will be appointing an Inquiry Board under the Inquiries Act (Cap 273) to conduct a thorough investigation and examination of all the facts and circumstances related to the case of Nicolette Ghirxi.
The Board will be chaired by Emeritus Judge Lawrence Quintano.
This Board has been established to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the professional assistance provided to Ms. Ghirxi whenever she sought help or was referred to domestic violence social services, including the procedures followed during the risk assessment.
Additionally, the Board will be tasked with recommending whether further measures are necessary in the operation of social services provided to victims of domestic violence.
This inquiry will be conducted alongside the ongoing investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Board, which is analyzing the events leading up to the tragic death of Nicolette Ghirxi on Monday, August 12, 2024.
The Board has been given four months to submit its report, and the ministry has committed to making the inquiry’s findings public.
