Malta celebrated its inaugural gold medal victory at the Balkan Championships Marathon in Belgrade. Following his recent silver medal in the Half Marathon, Luke Micallef outdid himself by clinching the top spot in the Marathon event.
Despite the scorching conditions in the Serbian capital, Micallef displayed remarkable resilience, outpacing two formidable Turkish marathoners in a challenging uphill finish. His finishing time of 2:26:38 secured him first place, with Selim Seven trailing closely behind at 2:27:04.
Although the overall Belgrade Marathon was dominated by Kenyan athletes Gilbert Chumba (2:11:48) and Gilbert Cheruyot (02:12:20), Micallef’s achievement was noteworthy. Despite finishing fourth overall among the Kenyan contenders, he secured Malta’s first gold medal in the Balkan Championships. This accomplishment is particularly commendable given the formidable competition from Central and Eastern European athletes.
