Gina McNamara delivered a dramatic late charge to successfully defend her gold medal in the women’s 800 metres at the GSSE in Andorra, leading Malta to a remarkable double podium finish in the event.

Trailing in third as the race entered its final stretch, McNamara found another gear, powering past Cyprus’ Stavrini Filippou and fellow Maltese athlete Janet Richard with a blistering sprint. She crossed the line in 2:10.01, securing a hard-fought and emotional victory.

Filippou, who had led the race for most of the two laps, was overtaken in the final metres and had to settle for silver with a time of 2:10.85.

Meanwhile, Richard claimed bronze, finishing just a second behind in a performance that reinforced Malta’s strength in middle-distance running.

McNamara’s triumph not only reaffirmed her position as one of the GSSE’s top middle-distance runners but also delivered a proud moment for Maltese athletics.

The double podium result is a significant milestone for Team Malta, showcasing the team’s growing competitiveness and depth in athletics at the international level.

Minor Cabinet Reshuffle Expected

Minor Cabinet Reshuffle Expected
May 28 2025 Share

A minor cabinet reshuffle is expected to be announced later today, amid heightened activity at Castille. Prime Minister Robert Abela has reportedly met with Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, who is said to be dissatisfied with his current portfolio. Camilleri had previously offered his resignation following the high-profile Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) cannabis heist, a resignation which the Prime Minister did not accept at the time.

Camilleri’s expected change in ministry is likely to cause some movement within the cabinet. However, Prime Minister Abela is not expected to make sweeping changes. In recent comments to the media, he expressed his satisfaction with the performance of his ministers and reaffirmed his trust in Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, who is widely tipped to take over the Home Affairs portfolio.

Owen Bonnici is considered one of the senior figures within the Labour cabinet. He first entered the Cabinet in 2013 and has held several key positions since, including Minister for Justice, Education, and Culture. With a long-standing career in politics, Bonnici brings substantial experience and is seen as a steady hand to take on the responsibilities at Home Affairs.

Despite stepping away from his current role, Byron Camilleri still retains the Prime Minister’s confidence and is expected to be assigned another portfolio. Potential options include Culture or Tourism. The latter has recently been added to the growing list of responsibilities held by Ian Borg, following Minister Clayton Bartolo’s resignation. Borg currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Minister for Tourism.

Borg also holds the position of Labour’s Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs. Internal sources have praised his ability to manage multiple portfolios efficiently, describing him as someone who remains focused and capable under pressure.

The Cabinet is expected to convene later today, during which Prime Minister Abela will communicate the changes to his team.

‘I call out to you, but you don’t respond. I look, but I don’t believe’, wrote Stef Coppola, the wife of the late Shaun Coppola, who lost his life in a tragic motorcycle accident on St Paul’s Bypass.

‘I want to tell you a lot of things but I don’t have any words’, she continued. ‘I know you are not coming back but I hope they tell us they made a mistake. I know it’s not a dream but it’s like I’m living in one.’

‘We love you forever and I promise that I will keep your memory alive for the daughter you had so many plans and dreams for. Ella and I are always proud of you.’

Rest in peace Shaun, and deepest condolences to loved ones.
