Għargħur European Week of Sports 2024 Takes Over Village

Oct 17 2024 Share

The Għargħur Local Council recently hosted its inaugural Għargħur European Week of Sports 2024, an eight-day celebration of athleticism featuring 19 events.

Over 150 participants engaged in various activities, including running competitions, fitness classes, pool matches, and football tournaments. The event raised nearly €2,053 for charity, blending sports with community spirit and philanthropy.

Leading the initiative was Mariah Meli, Għargħur’s Local Council Minority Leader for sports, family, and health. Driven by a commitment to inclusivity, Mariah’s goal was to promote local sports and support Puttinu Cares, an organization close to her heart.

Despite rainy weather, the week began with an All Stars Tournament hosted by Għargħur Football Club, followed by diverse fitness sessions led by trainers like Josette Magri and Martin Fenech. Community figures such as Neil Agius and Leanne Bartolo also contributed to the event’s momentum.

Heartfelt moments included a 5K Fun Run, where a runner found inspiration to push through upon seeing athlete Neil Agius in the crowd. Community involvement was strong, with local residents and businesses contributing resources, and public figures like Miss Għargħur promoting the event.

Looking forward, Mariah aims to expand next year’s event, incorporating more sports and wider community engagement. The success of 2024 lays the foundation for an even bigger 2025 celebration, further fostering growth and unity.

Eve Borg Bonello Wears ‘Crooks Everywhere’ Shirt to Parliament

Eve Borg Bonello Wears 'Crooks Everywhere' Shirt to Parliament

On the seventh anniversary of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination, Nationalist Party MP Eve Borg Bonello made a powerful statement by wearing a shirt bearing the final words from Caruana Galizia’s blog: “There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate.”

Borg Bonello posted a photo of herself walking into Parliament wearing the shirt, accompanied by a poignant caption: “This T-shirt was given out 7 years ago, during the first protest after Daphne’s assassination. It’s ridiculous that her final words still ring true now, 7 years after that tragic day, 7 years of utter impunity. We were there at the very beginning and we will be there till the very end, when justice is finally served.”

Her action came amid ongoing calls for justice, as a vigil was held on Wednesday in Valletta to commemorate Caruana Galizia’s life and to demand accountability for her murder.

Despite multiple investigations and court proceedings, justice for the journalist—who was known for her investigative reporting on corruption in Malta—has yet to be fully realised.
