Malta is enhancing its preparedness for natural disasters through the National Emergency Response Framework Programme (NERFP).

A committee under the Office of the Head of the Public Service has been established to evaluate potential scenarios and address gaps in the nation’s response strategy.

Initial projects include developing a Media Policy and a strategy for major incidents.

Additionally, Boiler Wharf in Isla will be renovated to serve as a storage and response hub, equipped with a training room and emergency control centre, bolstering Malta’s resilience to maritime crises.

To address traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, the government is proposing a range of short-term initiatives aimed at alleviating congestion.

The  priority is to better organize local roads and adapt to a modern economy that operates around the clock.

These proposals will focus on enhancing the coordination of roadworks, improving public transport, implementing effective parking schemes, reducing reliance on private cars, and promoting sustainable mobility.

In this regard, the government has already initiated national consultations with social partners.

Last week, the government held a specific meeting with the Maltese Council for Economic and Social Development to discuss these proposals.
