Domestic Violence And Digital Fraud Among Top Concerns For Malta In 2024

Domestic Violence And Digital Fraud Among Top Concerns For Malta In 2024
Apr 8 2025 Share

While Malta’s overall crime levels remain low, the 2024 Crime Review highlights significant concerns in specific areas, notably domestic violence and online fraud.

Domestic violence cases rose to 2,225, a 7% increase from 2023. Notably, psychological harm accounted for 78% of these reports — a clear indicator of how abuse has shifted in nature. Grievous bodily harm due to physical force also increased, reflecting ongoing vulnerabilities within households.

On the cybercrime front, fraudulent schemes using mobile messages and online scams dropped significantly, from 2,905 in 2023 to 2,394 in 2024. Despite this welcome decrease, fraud is still 14.4% of all crime, a staggering 1,396% increase since 2004.

Meanwhile, computer misuse cases dropped by 43%, suggesting improved awareness and possibly stronger preventive systems. But experts caution that cybercrime is fast-evolving, and the public must remain alert.

The report urges that domestic abuse and digital crime are no longer fringe issues — they are core societal challenges that require not only policing but community responsibility, education, and support services.
