A German couple has been charged with the murder of a 27-year-old Ukrainian refugee, her 51-year-old mother, and the abduction of the refugee’s newborn daughter.
The 44-year-old woman and her 43-year-old husband allegedly committed the crimes to fulfil their “long-unfulfilled wish to have a daughter,” according to prosecutors.
The couple reportedly joined a support group on the Telegram messaging app to connect with Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion.
Through this group, they met the young Ukrainian woman, who was seeking translation help during her pregnancy. In March, they invited her and her mother to a meal at a restaurant.
During the meal, the couple allegedly drugged both women. When the mother became unwell, they offered to take her to the hospital but instead drove her to a lake, where the man allegedly killed her with multiple blows to the head and disposed of her body in the water.
They then deceived the Ukrainian woman, claiming her mother had suffered a heart attack, and drove her and her newborn to a location near the Rhine River in Hockenheim.
The man allegedly killed her with “at least three” blows to the head and then set her body on fire. The couple took the baby home and were later arrested. They are being held pending trial, facing double murder and child abduction charges.
