Leading Insurance company GasanMamo Insurance continues to support environmental projects as it donates two diving kits and diving gear for NGO Zibel. With marine debris being a well-documented issue both locally and globally, the team up prioritises initiatives which support the caring for the environment. With an estimated 224,000 metric tons of trash floating on the surface and anther 8.5 million metric tons sinking to the bottom, such initiatives are crucial in pushing for environmental awareness and protection.

This summer alone, Zibel has collected 3.9 tonnes of waste with the diving clean ups, surfacing regular items such as car tyres and bottles and the occasional peculiar items such as thermos flasks, boat trailers and even false teeth. GasanMamo general manager Mark Mamo expressed his pleasure in collaborating once again with one of Malta’s most energetic environmental NGOs. ‘Their passion for cleaner seas creates a natural fit between our organisations, and the environmental ethos that we strive to create and support both within our organisation and our communities’ he stated.

Ċikku Fenech field to be transformed into green family area

Ċikku Fenech field to be transformed into green family area

A popular abandoned field in Mosta attributed to Ċikku Fenech will be transformed into a green open space for families to enjoy. Having been scheduled for development, the government decided to instead transform it into a ‘green lung’ within an urban setting. The size of a football ground, the project received an investment of €1 million from the Social and National Development fund, carried out by WasteServ branch GreenServ.

The field was never opened up to the public, having been an area linked to Malta’s once most-wanted man Ċikku Fenech. Over the years, it ended up an illegal dumping site, with a rusting car being one of the most iconic items left there to waste. Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship and Communities Alex Muscat stated that the project will seek to respect the mature trees and indigenous life which has grown in the field as the transformation commences.

Muscat added that this is not an isolated project, but part of an investment for projects which seek to increase the green lungs of Malta. Rabat, Ħal-Qormi, Ħaż-Żabbar and Ħamrun will all be benefitting from this eco-friendly project. The Mosta project is set to be completed by spring of 2022.

Olympian Allyson Felix breaks records, 2 years after pregnancy scare and Nike dismissal

Aug 11 2021 Share

Last Saturday, Allyson Felix won her second medal in the Tokyo 2020 olympics when, together with her teammates, she crossed the line. Allyson said that that medal win was her best one, as she proved everyone wrong and became the most decorated US track athlete.

Before 2018, Allyson was one of Nike’s most important clients. In America she is regarded as the ‘track queen’, so marketing her wasn’t a problem for the American brand. This all changed when in 2018 she got pregnant whilst renewing her Nike contract. In athletics most women retire after starting a family, but that wasn’t the case for Allyson. Her pregnancy didn’t quite go to plan as she had to have a C-section two months before the baby’s propose birth. She wanted to compete at the next Olympics, to try and break Carl Lewis’ record of 10 Olympic medals to become America’s most decorated athlete in track. After finding out that she’s pregnant, Nike offered her another deal but lowered her endorsement by 70%.

Allyson immediately rejected the deal and signed for Athleta, becoming their first sponsored athlete. Allyson felt valued at Athleta, something she didn’t feel at Nike. At this year’s Olympics she broke many records, not only Carl Lewis’. At the 400m race she ran her fastest time in 6 years, receiving her first bronze medal.

5 ways to beat the heat during a red alert heat wave

5 ways to beat the heat during a red alert heat wave
Aug 11 2021 Share

The Malta International Airport has issued a red-alert warning on the sizzling hot temperatures spreading over the Maltese islands starting today. Venturing outside could feel as hot as 43°C, a historical temperature for Malta. Since we’ll be living in a weather oven for some time, we’re providing you with some tips to stay safe and beat the heat as Malta scorches.

Hydrate

The first and most obvious way to beat the heat is to stay constantly hydrated. Hydration not only helps the body cool down, but it also avoids the severe chances of dehydration which can lead to some very nasty medical repercussions. Make sure you have access to plenty of water as you go about your day!

Beaching it

The sea could offer some much needed respite from a day of sweat and exhaustion. Splashing around in one of Malta’s pristine beaches should be done cautiously however as UV still penetrates the sea level considerably. So try to hit the time sweet spot when the sun isn’t at its peak, wear sun cream no matter what and find some umbrella shade.

Your friend the curtain

If you’re stuck indoors and the over-worked air conditioning system just isn’t cutting it, consider closing your curtains and tilting up your blinds. This will block sunlight from coming in whilst you’re cozying it up at home. It’s all the little details that count, and this simple manoeuvre can contribute immensely.

Watch what you eat

Eating cool and light foods can help your body cool off naturally. Munch on salads or whip out your favourite ice cream. There’s also the added bonus of avoiding switching on the oven which would mean being stuck in a kitchen radiating heat. On the flip side, spicy foods have been known to be used by people living in scorching climates to cool off as they cause the body to perspire easily and experience a brief cool hit.

Switch up your light bulbs

If you want to go the extra mile with heat avoidance, consider switching to LED light bulbs which produce about 70% less heat than standard light bulbs. It makes sense really… you wouldn’t want to bring in a miniature sun when the real one’s out there burning up the place. You’ll also be going more eco-friendly – the world too is suffering from this tremendous heat!
