Safi Demonstration Demands Release Of Detained Ethiopians

Safi Demonstration Demands Release Of Detained Ethiopians

Activists protested outside the Safi Detention Center on Tuesday, demanding the release of five Ethiopians facing deportation.

The five, who had been living and working legally in Malta for two decades, were detained after their refugee status was rejected.

The Ethiopian community, along with employers and activists, condemned the government’s actions, highlighting the men’s contributions to Malta’s economy and society.

Moviment Graffitti emphasised that the men had built their lives in Malta, paying taxes, forming social networks, and becoming integral to the country’s social fabric.

The activists argued that sending them back to Ethiopia would expose them to persecution and urged authorities to offer a pathway for long-term migrants to regularise their status.

Criticising government raids on homes and workplaces, the group called these actions “state violence” that forces undocumented people to live in fear. Employers also voiced their concerns, stressing the valuable role migrants play in Malta’s workforce and society.

The protesters demanded the immediate release of the detained men, an end to government raids, and the creation of a legal pathway for undocumented but long-standing community members to secure their immigration status and contribute to the nation’s development.

Camenzuli Goal Hands Malta 1-0 Victory Over Andorra

Camenzuli Goal Hands Malta 1-0 Victory Over Andorra

Malta secured their first UEFA Nations League win with a 1-0 victory over Andorra, thanks to a crucial goal by Ryan Camenzuli just before halftime.

After a disappointing loss to Moldova, pressure mounted on coach Michele Marcolini and his side. The match saw a balanced start, but Malta gradually took control.

Midway through the first half, the team had multiple scoring opportunities, with Joseph Mbong and Carlo Zammit Lonardelli both coming close. Camenzuli finally broke the deadlock after a smart pass from Matthew Guillaumier.

The second half was more tense, with Andorra pushing for an equalizer. Bonello’s heroics kept Malta in the lead, while Andorra came close several times, including a near-miss by Jordi Alaez.

Despite intense pressure in the final moments, Malta held firm to secure a much-needed win. They now aim to build on this momentum for their next game against Moldova.

Well done boys!

€27M To Be Injected Into Independent Schools

€27M To Be Injected Into Independent Schools
Sep 11 2024 Share

The Maltese government, in collaboration with the Independent Schools Association (ISA), has reached a landmark agreement that will invest €26,875,940 into independent schools, ensuring stability in the sector.

Following concerns raised by the ISA in July regarding potential significant fee increases for parents, the agreement was approved by the Cabinet.

The anticipated fee hikes were driven by recent salary adjustments under a sectoral agreement for educators in public schools, negotiated with the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT).

Without intervention, independent schools would have faced abnormal fee increases at the start of the academic year.

Currently, independent schools serve 8,244 students and employ 967 educators. Through this agreement, the government will provide financial assistance to these schools until 2029, ensuring that fee increases remain between 6% and 12% annually, thus protecting families from sudden financial strain.

This assistance also covers a one-time €1,000 allowance for each educator and retroactive payments from January 2023, as well as a substantial increase in per capita funding for the next five years.

Education Minister Clifton Grima emphasised the government’s commitment to maintaining free educational choice for Maltese and Gozitan students while supporting educators. This move ensures continued parity between public and independent school educators’ working conditions.
