From Firefighter To Fighter: Robert’s Battle With ALS

From Firefighter To Fighter: Robert’s Battle With ALS
Sep 2 2024 Share

Robert Bugeja, a devoted husband to Rita and father of two, dedicated his life to Civil Protection. Known as the ‘Ġojja’ among his firefighter colleagues, Robert found deep satisfaction in his work.

But life took a cruel turn when he was diagnosed with ALS, a condition that gradually stripped away his physical abilities. Despite this, Robert continues to fight, showing up for work and supporting his team as much as he can.

“Imagine going from a life full of activity—gym, work, part-time jobs—to being confined to a wheelchair, unable to move,” Robert shares. The reality hit hard when a simple task like changing a bulb at home became an impossible challenge, leading to the heartbreaking diagnosis of ALS.

Today, Robert resides at DAR Bjorn in Żebbuġ. “The separation is too cruel,” Robert admits during the Marelli program, reflecting on the pain of leaving his home and family. It became impossible for his family to provide the 24-hour care he needs, making the move necessary.

Yet, the bond between Robert and his wife remains unbreakable. “Even when I was just working on something at home, she was always there,” he recalls.

Despite the unimaginable challenges, Robert’s spirit shines brightly. His smile, his positivity, and his unwavering determination to live life fully are truly inspiring.

Every day, his firefighter colleagues come to pick him up, so he can continue to contribute to the work he loves. “I still have one finger left that I can use to press the spacebar and respond,” Robert says, a testament to his unyielding will.

DAR Bjorn has become a crucial part of Robert’s life, offering him the care he needs without restrictive visiting hours, allowing Rita to visit him daily. But DAR Bjorn relies on support from people like you to continue providing this essential care.

On September 22nd, Robert will be with us during the fundraising telethon, lending his strength to the cause. This is your chance to make a difference. Join us in supporting the DAR Bjorn Respite project with your generous donations. Together, we can help ensure that people like Robert receive the care they desperately need.

Adele has announced that she will be taking an indefinite hiatus from music following the conclusion of her Las Vegas residency in October.

During a recent performance, the singer expressed her need for rest after three years of live shows. “I have spent the last seven years building a new life for myself, and I want to live it now,” said Adele, who recently confirmed her engagement to Rich Paul.

Reflecting on her long run of performances, she admitted, “I’m not the most comfortable performer, I know that, but I am very f*cking good at it. And I have really enjoyed performing for nearly three years now, which is the longest I’ve ever done and probably the longest I’ll ever do.”

With only 10 shows left in her residency, Adele told fans, “After that, I will not see you for an incredibly long time.”

She expressed her gratitude, saying she would “hold you dear in my heart” during her break and cherish memories of past shows.

In an interview with German TV broadcaster ZDF, Adele confirmed she has no plans for new music and is looking forward to exploring other creative pursuits during her time off.
