The government will soon launch a scheme offering six months of free gym membership to youths aged 18 to 20, with costs fully covered as part of a Budget initiative.
The initiative was inspired by a proposal from Bulletproof Culture, a fitness group that campaigned for free gym memberships for all 18-year-olds.
Finance Minister Clyde Caruana then went on to announce it during the 2025 Budget reading.

Bulletproof released a video explaining how the scheme will end up working;
Eligible individuals, born in 2005, 2006, or 2007, will be able to register online once a list of participating gyms is finalised.
Under the scheme, youths can choose their preferred gym from approved providers. After registering, participants will receive a voucher granting them free access for six months.
The group had launched the idea by sharing a video of Prime Minister Robert Abel, a former bodybuilder, working out to promote the idea.
Malta’s high obesity rates, with forecasts suggesting over a third of adults will be obese by 2030, make this scheme timely.
