The Breeds of Origin Conservancy, in collaboration with the Koperattiva Maltija tal-Mogħoż u n-Nagħaġ (KMMN), the Zejtun Local Council, and the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, successfully hosted the first-ever show dedicated to Maltese indigenous sheep and goat breeds in Zejtun.

This event celebrated Malta’s rich agricultural heritage by showcasing a variety of native livestock, emphasising the unique traits developed over generations.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these traditional animals, which play a crucial role in Malta’s agricultural history and biodiversity.

The show featured various competitions, with awards presented for outstanding animals, and included information sessions to educate the public.

Lucas Micallef, Administrator of Breeds of Origin Conservancy, praised the collaboration of local organisations and the dedication of exhibitors. The positive feedback from attendees reflected strong community interest in conserving indigenous breeds.

Tragically, the day was later marked by the passing of Joseph Muscat, a renowned farmer and one of the last custodians of the Maltese goat. Breeds of Origin Conservancy remains committed to raising awareness and plans future events to further celebrate and preserve Malta’s native livestock.
