Former Valletta council mayor and minority leader, Christian Micallef, took to Facebook to revisit a proposal he had introduced during his tenure as minority leader.
Micallef explained that last November, he had presented a proposal to the entire council aimed at providing all Valletta residents with free access to essential professional mental health services, particularly for those most in need. He noted that the former mayor of Valletta had supported the initiative, a fact that can be verified through official minutes of the Valletta local council meetings.
Micallef stressed that mental health remains an issue that the country is not adequately addressing, emphasizing that mental health challenges can affect anyone. Furthermore, not everyone can afford private services if they seek help.
His proposal suggested offering these services in collaboration with the government and the Ministry of Health, using the Valletta health clinic to provide scheduled, free mental health services to residents of all ages who are going through tough times.
Despite unanimous support for the proposal from the council, Micallef expressed disappointment that it was ultimately shelved and never implemented.
He concluded his post by urging fellow Nationalist Party members Ylenia Montfort, Vince Fabri, and Roberta Bonello Felice, along with his friend and newly elected Labour mayor Olaf McKay, to move forward with the proposal and bring it to fruition.
In response, Valletta mayor Olaf McKay thanked Micallef, confirming his commitment to working with the councilors to ensure that the proposal is implemented as soon as possible. He also stated that he would be reaching out to Micallef to collaborate further on this important initiative.
