Former Mayor to Contest Elections After Resigning in 2023

Christian Zammit, the former mayor of Xagħra, has announced his return to politics after stepping down last year. Zammit left his position to call attention to the need for reforms aimed at protecting rural environments and urban areas, and to address the nexus of politics and business, alongside advocating for more autonomy and funding for local councils.

After a year away from the political scene, Zammit revealed in a recent social media post that he has been persuaded by many citizens and the Labour Party to re-enter politics and contest the upcoming local council elections in June.

In his announcement, Zammit clarified his motivations, stating, “And I’m doing so not because I was given a promotion or promise a position, as some have assumed. I’m doing this simply because politics is in my blood, and Xagħra is in my heart.” His decision marks a significant return to the political landscape of Xagħra, with many residents of the Gozitan village calling for his return in past months.

Foundation for Cancer Research and Innovation launched in Malta

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti announced the launch of the foundation that will run the Centre for Research and Innovation on Cancer in Malta. The aim of this foundation is to integrate our country’s research and innovation strategies to align with the European Union’s goals and strategies in the fight against cancer.

“This foundation will be leading a centre of excellence, where innovation in cancer research and treatment is not only taught about but is actually happening. This foundation will work to overcome challenges that traditionally hold back research efforts, by fostering a multidisciplinary approach that exploits the collective expertise of researchers and medical professionals. This will be the foundation on which we build our local capacities, as well as integrating them with the wider international research community,’’ explains the parliamentary secretary.

He added that this initiative would showcase what can be achieved through collaboration. By incorporating local knowledge with EU knowledge and innovations, this can lead to significant advances in cancer research.

“This scientific initiative represents a call for action for collective work to beat cancer. Together we will collaborate and work for a stronger future for the generations to come,” said Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti.

The chairman of the Foundation, Prof. Christian Scerri said, “With this Foundation we are paving the way for the first cancer research and innovation centre in Malta, not only for the advancement of research on cancer but also to pave the way for a healthier future.’’

Cyrus Enger Confirms He Will Not Contest Upcoming MEP Elections

Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer has announced that he will not be running in the upcoming MEP elections. Engerer made this announcement via a Facebook post on Saturday morning, noting that the end of the European Parliament’s final plenary session for this term marks his decision not to contest again. In his post, Engerer expressed his honor and privilege in representing Malta’s left and advocating for progressive values including social justice, a united Europe, environmental protection, justice, and human rights.

During his tenure, Engerer focused on advancing these principles through various legislative works and resolutions. He detailed his involvement in key projects such as the Greens Claim Directive and a resolution that declared the European Union a free zone for LGBTIQ individuals. Engerer expressed great satisfaction in his engagement with the youth, particularly highlighting his initiative to open his office to 100 young people post-pandemic. This opportunity allowed them to actively participate in meetings, law negotiations, and amendment proposals.

Furthermore, Engerer extended his gratitude towards Labour Party Leader Robert Abela, who encouraged him to reconsider his decision until the last moment. He also thanked his team in Brussels, his European Parliament colleagues, his partner Randolph, his family, and everyone who supported him throughout his political journey. Engerer’s announcement reflects a conclusion of a significant chapter in his career while underscoring his lasting commitment to the values he championed.

Young Palestinian Girl Selah Visits Gozo Primary School

Selah the Palestinian girl who is undergoing treatment in Malta, yesterday visited Sir Arturo Mercieca Primary School in Gozo. The girl unfortunately suffered a major trauma before she arrived in Malta, when her mother and sister were killed during an attack.

Her visit was made possible thanks to Palestinian Ambassador Fadi Hanina and his collaborators. The aim was for the children to understand more about the importance of peace and reconciliation.

The school made Selah feel at ease and at home with both teachers and students showing their admiration towards her by welcoming her in the school hall and performing various acts to her to cheer her up.

The children also gave her various gifts including books and toys.

At the end of the assembly, Ambassador Fadi Hanina thanked the school community for their warm welcome and hospitality shown to Selah. Another unique experience for all of us.
