Spain bans establishments from turning air conditioning below 27°C

Spain bans establishments from turning air conditioning below 27°C
Aug 4 2022 Share

The Spanish government has just set a law stating that, in most public places, setting the air condition unit to anything below 27°C is illegal.

This new law applies to establishments such as bars, airports, cinemas, shopping centres and many more commercial outlets but does not apply to households. The reasoning behind such a decision is to reduce Spain’s energy consumption and reliance on Russian oil and gas; Spain had joined the rest of the EU in pledging to reduce consumption by seven per cent.

Not exclusive to just summer, public buildings also will not be able to increase their heating units above 19C in winter, with shops to have their windows turned off by 10pm.

Spain is currently having an incredibly hot summer, with two heatwaves in July and temperatures expected to hit 40°C once again in the coming days.

Should Malta adopt these laws?
