“We’re scared of every sound we hear, and I think there are a lot of people like me, especially mothers trying to raise children, young children next to buildings like this.”

This comes after Jean Paul Sofia’s mother Isabelle Bonnici’s pressure, along with activists, changed the government’s decision to lead a magisterial inquiry into the death of her son, who died in a building collapse.

According to testimony presented in court on Tuesday, Bernice Cilia was tragically shot dead by her estranged husband in Corradino while carrying a file containing crucial documents pertaining to her case before the Family Court.

The file, a thick light-blue folder, was retrieved from her car and presented in court as part of the evidence against Roderick Cassar, who is currently pleading not guilty to femicide.

The file contained a variety of important materials, such as receipts, emails, screenshots, and copies of police reports that Bernice Cilia had filed in the days leading up to her murder in November of the previous year.

Additionally, a copy of the mediation proceedings between the accused and his estranged wife was also included in the file.

At the request of the prosecution, these documents were incorporated into the records of the murder case. It was revealed that Bernice’s lawyer had initiated mediation through a letter filed on May 17 the previous year.

The defence, however, raised objections regarding the admissibility of the mediation file as evidence. The court acknowledged this concern but clarified that the matter would be addressed by the defence during the preliminary pleas stage.

As the legal proceedings continue, the case remains under scrutiny and further developments are awaited.
