The highly anticipated trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” a prequel to the beloved classic, has finally debuted at Disney’s largest convention, D23.
The trailer features a young Mufasa and Taka (Scar) exploring the stunning African plains, as the story of how the orphaned Mufasa rose to become king over his adopted brother Scar is recounted to Simba, Timon, and Pumba in the future.
The film is directed by Barry Jenkins, who shared with fans at D23, “Like all of you, ‘The Lion King’ made an indelible mark on me.”
Jenkins also revealed that musical theatre icon Lin-Manuel Miranda will compose the film’s original songs.
Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. star as the younger versions of Mufasa (originally voiced by James Earl Jones in the 1994 film and 2019 remake) and Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons in 1994 and Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2019).
“Mufasa: The Lion King” is set to roar into theaters on Dec. 20.
