Josh Cavallo who is not only known for being a promising football player but also known as the first openly gay footballer is now engaged after proposing to his partner, Leighton Morell at Adelaide United’s home ground Coopers Stadium.
Back in 2021, the Australian footballer who is also of Maltese descent due to his grandparents, became the first out gay male professional footballer in Australia and the first in the world since Justin Fashanu, who tragically took his own life in 1997.
On Thursday, he thanked the Australian A-league club for helping him set up the surprise proposal in a post on Instagram.
“Your endless support has meant so much to me,” he wrote.
“You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live every day of my life authentically.
“It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started.”
Josh Cavallo’s impact on the game cannot be underestimated. Following his announcement, more players have found the courage to come out, including young Blackpool striker Josh Daniels and arguably the highest-profile current male gay footballer, Jakub Jankto. Jankto represents his country Czech Republic and plays for Serie A side Cagliari.
