Taking to social media, marine biologist Alan Deidun shared a video sent to him by Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino showing 2024’s annual mass spawning of mauve stinger jellyfish.
The Pelagia noctiluca spawning seems to have occurred due to the relatively warm and calm January weather.
The next generation of jellyfish will be visible, Deidun explained, in circa 3 months, ‘unless the water temperature cools down below the norm’.
The stingers have been spotted in Marsascala, the general south coast and even Hondoq ir-Rummien in the past few days.
Anyone who spots such sights is encouraged to share their footage through ocean.mt/jellyfish for the Spot the Jellyfish Citizen Science Campaign.
