Russ Cook, known as the “Hardest Geezer,” has completed an extraordinary 16,000km run across 16 countries, spanning more than 352 days from South Africa’s Cape Agulhas to Tunisia’s Ras Angela, the length of Africa.
This accomplishment, believed to be the first tip-to-tip run of its kind, culminated in a celebratory finish in Tunisia, where Cook raised over £600,000 for charity.
Throughout his journey, Cook faced numerous challenges, including a robbery at gunpoint in Angola, encounters with men wielding machetes in the Republic of the Congo, health scares, and visa complications. Despite setbacks, he persevered, documenting his odyssey on social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube, garnering millions of views.

Cook’s run supported charities like the Running Charity, aiding young people experiencing homelessness and Sandblast, promoting awareness of the Saharawi people. His physical and mental endurance was tested as he traversed rainforests, mountains, and the Sahara desert.
Reflecting on his experience, Cook described the journey as immensely challenging yet rewarding, emphasizing the kindness and hospitality of people he encountered along the way. Before embarking on this challenge, Cook expressed a desire to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
Cook’s friend and co-founder of the Running Charity, Alex Eagle, praised his determination and resilience, highlighting Cook’s ability to overcome obstacles akin to those faced by the young people they support. The charity plans to commemorate Cook’s achievement with group runs and participation in the London Marathon.
