In a l-Istrina historical first, it was revealed that the first ever fundraiser from within Malta’s Correctional Facility was undertaken.

The news was revealed by Commissioner for Welfare and Development for Prisons Chris Siegersma, who explained how, for the first time, the prisoners in Corradino Correctional Facility, contributed to this yearly fundraiser.

Siegersma went on to urge the public to contribute to this important fundraiser to help as many people in need as possible.

Mariah Carey breaks Spotify record for most single-day streams

The Christmas holidays have become synonymous with Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ as it plays in literally every corner where the holiday is celebrated.

And now, the singer has managed to break a Spotify record with her classic Christmas anthem. According to the platform, the song was streamed a whopping 21.27 million times during Christmas Eve.

This is not the first record Carey broke due to her festive music as the song recently spent its 10th week at #1 on Billboard Hot 100. This makes her the first woman with three songs which led the chart for double digit weeks.

The song was originally released back in 1994, but it’s association with the holiday sees it resurface year after year as people get into the Christmas mood.

Carey’s song is followed by Adele’s ‘Easy On Me’ at 19.75 million and ‘Last Christmas’ at 19.07 million. Taylor Swift’s recently released ‘Anti-Hero follows closely in 4th place with 17.4 million, with the top 5 closed off by another Christmas anthem: ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ with 17.28 million.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ almost at $900 million gross globally

James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has generated around $855 million in global ticket sales since its December 16th release date, making it the fifth highest grossing film released this year.

Domestically, the sequel to the 2009 hit ‘Avatar’ raked in an estimated $56 million during its second weekend in theatres. This is a 58% drop from its debut, with the culprit for the lower turnout assumed to be the winter weather and storms.

A decline in ticket sales is quite common for such blockbusters, with most experiencing a 50% to 70% downgrade. The metric is known as the second-week drop and is often used as an indicator of whether a film will have a longevity at the box office.

Films falling less than 50% are expected to have long runs whereas those which top 70% are likely to see ticket sales drop even more.

This means the Avatar sequel is in tranquil waters (pun intended) for the time being, with international ticket sales continue to thrive. In fact, apart from the $254 million domestic ticket sales, the film generated $601 million from international markets.

Taking to social media, Nationalist Party MP Adrian Delia stated that he has been receiving information of a massive traffic standstill in Mellieha.

The politician said that some of the commuters have been in traffic for well over an hour as many of them attempt to make their way to Gozo on Boxing Day.

Delia issued a call to the relevant authorities to issue any important information about the situation so as to inform the public about the problem.
