Meet the first transgender athlete to compete at the olympics

Meet the first transgender athlete to compete at the olympics

Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard will become the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics, representing New Zealand in Tokyo. Competing in the women’s super heavyweight category along with four other weightlifters, The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) announced Hubbard’s inclusion. Hubbard will also become the oldest weightlifter at the games at 43-years-old, lifting 628lbs in two lifts on her path to qualification.

Her competing in the women’s category opened up quite a controversy. Belgian weightlifter Anna Vanbellinghen stated that it would be ‘like a bad joke’ if Hubbard were to compete in the category. She stated that whilst supporting the transgender community, the inclusion should not be at the expense of others. New Zealand’s government are however backing Hubbard fully, with NZOC chief executive stating that they acknowledge ‘gender identity in sport being a highly sensitive and complex issue requiring a balance between human rights and fairness on the field of play.’

Bernard Grech wants Roberta Metsola and Joe Giglio to run as PN deputy leaders

Bernard Grech wants Roberta Metsola and Joe Giglio to run as PN deputy leaders
Jun 20 2021 Share

Opposition leader Bernard Grech has shown interest in having popular MEP and European Parliament vice-president Roberta Metsola and lawyer Joe Giglio running as deputy leaders of the Nationalist Party. However, despite the interest, both contenders are hoping to see David Agius and Robert Arrigo stepping down from their posts willingly. The two were elected as deputy leaders for parliamentary and party affairs respectively after Adrian Delia was elected leader.

At least one has communicated to MPs of his reservations that it should be the opposition leader himself that makes the plans clear and personal. This comes ahead of a PN General Council in July. There is no election in such councils as the party statute mandates that the term of the leadership positions until after the general election. Other candidates were expressing their interest in taking over other established posts. Some favourites for the posts include Martina Caruana, a lawyer, Joe Grech, the president of the PN’s youth organisation, MEP candidate Roselyn Borg Knight, and Mark Anthony Sammut who was formerly the president of the executive committee before resigning.
