Apr 19 2021 Share

Roberta Metsola has been appointed as a rapporteur for an initiative that will see the implementation of EU-wide rules against ‘Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation’, also dubbed SLAPPs. Together with German S&D MEP Tiemo Wölken, Metsola will be drafting a report aimed at getting a wide-reaching agreement which prevent SLAPPs across the EU bloc.

Metsola said that this is ‘a water-shed moment for journalism in Europe. Journalists face threats of not only violence and murder but legal suites from unscrupulous actors who seek to silence media houses with the threat of vexatious lawsuits.’ On a Facebook post, Metsola dedicated this effort to Daphne Caruana Galizia and every media house, journalist, blogger and NGO who have suffered or been threatened by ‘crooked politicians’ and ‘corrupt corporations’.
