Fgura Scout Group Attends Essex International Jamboree

The Fgura Scout Group set off for the Essex International Jamboree yesterday, joining thousands of scouts from around the world. The Jamboree officially opened last night, with  a lively ceremony, marking the start of a week filled with activities and cultural exchanges.

Held every four years in Chelmsford, Essex, the Essex International Jamboree is a major event in the scouting calendar, attracting over 10,000 participants. It offers young scouts a chance to challenge themselves with outdoor activities, learn new skills, and make friends from different countries.

The Fgura Scout Group, founded in 1965, has a long history of engaging Maltese youth in the scouting movement. Known for their enthusiasm and commitment, they eagerly anticipated this international event.

Throughout the week, the Fgura scouts will participate in various activities, from adventure sports to environmental projects. This jamboree is not just about fun; it’s an opportunity for personal growth and building lasting friendships. The experience will undoubtedly be a highlight of their scouting journey, allowing them to embrace the global spirit of scouting.

France transformed the Olympic opening ceremony into a bold, unprecedented spectacle on the River Seine.

Amid tight security, the event featured 90 boats carrying 10,000 athletes along a 3.7-mile route, highlighting iconic Parisian landmarks.

Several celebrities took part in this grand production. Lady Gaga opened the ceremony with a glamorous cabaret rendition of Zizi Jeanmaire’s ‘60s hit “Mon truc en plumes,” performing on gilded steps leading to the river, adorned with big pink feathers.

Celine Dion, whose participation was speculated but not confirmed beforehand, closed the show with a powerful performance of Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” from high atop the Eiffel Tower, creating a stunning finale.

The rain added a touch of Parisian drama and romance to the event.

Despite some fragmentation due to live TV production and commentary from NBC’s Mike Tirico, Kelly Clarkson, and Peyton Manning, it proved to be spectacle with a moving finale that saw a returning Dion and a laser show on the Eiffel Tower.

‘I’m Kamala Harris, and I’m running for President of the United States’, she wrote on social media, in a video outlining her aims and goals for her run and possible presidency.

In the video, she takes a dig at former President Donald Trump, who she says want a country of chaos, fear and hate. ‘We choose freedom’, her voice narrates in the video, queuing to Beyonce’s track.

As boats carried the various teams from around the world participating in the Paris Olympics 2024, among them were the Maltese contingent, proudly waving the red and white colours.

The Maltese Olympic Committee shared photos from the Maltese team’s arrival into the procession on the Seine.

‘The torrential rain that hit the Paris Opening Ceremony could have dampened spirits but Team Malta took it all with a strong dose of positivity and embraced the moment with loud cheers and big smiles’, wrote the committee on social media.

Team Malta features: Katryna Esposito (judo), Beppe Grillo (athletics), Kyle Micallef (swimming), Sasha Gatt (swimming), Gianluca Chetcuti (shooting).
