Facebook Celebrates 20th Birthday… But Not Happily

Facebook Celebrates 20th Birthday... But Not Happily
Feb 5 2024 Share

On its 20th anniversary, Facebook, now part of Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, reflects on a tumultuous week.

Despite the company’s success, with Meta valued over $1 trillion and reporting $39 billion in profit for 2023, it faces increasing controversy and political scrutiny.

Zuckerberg recently testified before the Senate, apologizing to parents whose children died due to social media-related issues.

The hearing focused on child safety, and lawmakers are considering potential legislation to regulate Meta and other social media platforms.

The company’s association with controversy has persisted over the years, and calls to amend Section 230, providing internet platforms immunity from certain lawsuits, gain momentum.

Despite the historic milestone, Meta refrains from public celebration amid intense scrutiny. Zuckerberg, in a post, emphasizes focusing on the long term. The French poll on social networks’ societal impact indicates growing skepticism.

While major companies often celebrate milestones grandly, Meta opts for a low-key approach to Facebook’s 20th birthday, mirroring its complex relationship with public perception and regulatory challenges.

Evelyn expressed how proud her family feels, writing:

‘It was not an easy voyage. There were moments which we enjoyed, moments in which you cried and moments in which we cried without showing you.’

‘But these are moments which helped you grow and make you a complete artist who, no matter what happens, keeps working to arrive where you wish.’

She concluded her message by reminding her to keep her feet on the ground and to not forget where she began, as well as those who were there during all these years. ‘We love you a lot’, finished Evelyn.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend Miguel shared a simple but effective message: ‘PROUDEST. Well done qalbi’.

People Shocked Over Mamaclay X-Factor Elimination
Feb 5 2024 Share

Following the last semifinal of X-Factor Malta, the official four finalist acts were chosen: Lapes & Nadine, Amelia, Shanice and Richard.

However, the night ended with the shock eliminations of Mamaclay and Sean Kamati, with the elimination of the former raising more than a bit of a social media outrage.

Judge Howard Keith, too, expressed his disbelief at Mamaclay’s elimination, writing: ‘Super surprised. I had faith. I was wrong to have faith that a non-Maltese could win.’

‘Yesterday was an obvious case of eliminating 2 top potential winners cause god forbid it was won by a non-Maltese national. This is called hypocrisy & nothing to be proud of but rather ashamed of. I’m not mincing my words’, wrote the judge.

Posts asking similar questions were also uploaded to social media, asking whether Mamaclay deserved the elimination.

Many commented that this was not fair at all and wanted to see the contestant compete in the final. There were similar reactions to Sean Kamati’s elimination, with some wanting to see the Namibian singer in the final.
