Work has commenced on a significant extension of the Bengħajsa Family Park in the south of Malta, with an additional 7,000 square metres being developed. Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, together with officials from Project Green and the Birżebbuġa Local Council, visited the site to mark the beginning of the next phase.
Following the approval of permits and project design by Project Green, workers have begun clearing overgrown vegetation to allow for surveying and soil analysis. These early steps are essential to ensure that biodiversity is not adversely affected by the development. The project will see the planting of 141 trees and a wide variety of shrubs.
Minister Dalli highlighted the importance of the park as a green space for the community, stating, “The Bengħajsa Family Park is becoming a valuable area for families, and this expansion ensures even greater access and enjoyment.”
Key features of the project include the installation of a geogrid pavement to stabilise the soil and improve accessibility, as well as a 290-cubic-metre reservoir to support a new irrigation system. The park will retain its natural landscape, while new play equipment, including accessible swings and ramps, will be added.
Liana Saliba Gazzano, Head of Project Implementation at Project Green, said the extension will bring the park within a ten-minute walk of around 1,700 residents, making it a more inclusive and accessible space for families in the area.
