Exiles Wellbees capped off an outstanding season in the BOV Winter League First Division by winning every match and securing the championship in dominant fashion.

They finished the campaign with a 13-point cushion over second-placed Marsaskala, showcasing their strength and consistency from start to finish.

Having already been confirmed as champions before their final fixture, Exiles made no mistake in closing the season on a high.

They stormed to a 19–8 victory over Marsaskala at the National Pool in Tal-Qroqq, wrapping up the campaign with a perfect record and maximum points.

The team’s impressive achievement was celebrated during the post-match trophy presentation, where Ernest Agius, Chief Operations Officer at Bank of Valletta, and Karl Izzo, President of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, handed over the championship silverware.

Marine Biologist Highlights Alien Algal Species On Local Seabed

Marine Biologist Highlights Alien Algal Species On Local Seabed

Taking to social media, local marine biologist Alan Deidun highlighted the problematic invasion of the harpoon red algal species on local waterbeds.

‘An alien landscape indeed’, wrote the marine biologist. ‘This underwater landscape might seem idyllic but upon closer scrutiny, one realises that the same landscape is dominated by an invasive alien species.”

The algal species, scientific name Asparagopsis taxiformis, is a species native to Western Australia and not the central Mediterranean.

Its presence in local waterbeds is therefore concerning. Deidun revealed that the species is currently being fed to cows in test trials on dairy farms to attempt to reduce their methane generation levels.

You know, one of the worst greenhouse gases around.
