Presidential Pardon For 3 Students, Lecturer Over Hack Case

Presidential Pardon For 3 Students, Lecturer Over Hack Case
Jul 1 2025 Share

Prime Minister Robert Abela this morning announced that his government has recommended a Presidential pardon for three students and a University of Malta lecturer charged in relation to ethical hacking activities.

The decision, he said, fulfils a political commitment to deliver justice.

The students had reported a security vulnerability in Malta’s student app, FreeHour, in 2022.

They were later charged with unauthorised access after requesting a bug bounty, a common practice in ethical hacking. Their lecturer, who had reviewed the email they sent to the app’s developers, was charged as an accomplice.

In his statement, the Prime Minister said the students and their lecturer acted with good intentions and should not have been left to face criminal proceedings alone.

He stated that the State must address such realities, and used the Cabinet’s prerogative to recommend clemency.

Funding From Local Councils’ Cultural Activities Scheme To Support 35 Events Across Malta And Gozo
Jul 1 2025 Share

Funding from the Local Councils Cultural Activities Scheme, issued by the Local Government Division, will support 35 cultural events across Malta and Gozo by the end of this year and the beginning of the next.

The announcement was made by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, alongside the Director General of the Local Government Division, Emil Vassallo.

“Our aim is to have these activities spread throughout the year, not only during the summer months but at other times as well. These events offer our communities the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. Many began as small initiatives and have grown into events eagerly anticipated by Maltese and Gozitan alike. For this reason, the government will continue to act as a catalyst for these schemes through the Local Government Division,” the Parliamentary Secretary stated.
