EU puts €100 million towards rapid virus tests

Brussels has set aside € 100 million for faster coronavirus test research and production as Europe faces a second wave of COVID-19 outbreak. The coronavirus antigen test is not known to be as accurate as the so-called “PCR test” in which a sample taken from the nasal swab is sent to a laboratory for examination. 

But it is faster, with results available at the testing point within 15 minutes, and European experts agree that the virus is now moving too rapidly to rely on tests that can take days.

Crash in Gozo leaves driver grievously injured

A 44-year-old man was seriously injured early on Wednesday in a traffic accident in Gozo. 

The police said the Ford Transit and Isuzu KB crashed in Mgarr Road at 7 a.m. The wounded man from Xewkija was the man driving the Isuzu. Investigations are still ongoing.

Germany and France were preparing for a new lockdown on Wednesday, as governments are trying to stop the rapidly increasing wave of coronavirus cases that are starting to flood European hospitals.

Although Germany has been doing better than many of its neighboring European countries during the pandemic, officials warn that it, too, is beginning to lose control of the situation and can very soon be uncontrollable.
