In a recent press conference, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti, alongside Xjenza Malta and the European Space Agency (ESA), announced the launch of the second Plan for a European Cooperating State (PECS) call for Malta. This initiative offers exciting opportunities for research and development in the Space sector, open to both private and public entities as well as academic institutions.

The PECS is a five-year initiative designed to support Malta’s Space sector, based on the country’s national capabilities. Local stakeholders can submit research proposals across various fields, including Space Upstream, Space Downstream, and Space Education.

Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti highlighted that the PECS provides a unique platform for Maltese stakeholders to compete nationally for ESA projects without facing competition from more experienced European countries. Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta, emphasised that the initiative fosters partnerships to help the local industry grow and engage in international Space Technology projects.

Stephen Airey, Head of PECS at ESA, noted that the scheme aims to enhance Malta’s Space-related competences and facilitate international cooperation. Applications can be submitted via the ESA Star platform, with further details available on both the ESA and Xjenza Malta websites.

€12 Million Birzebbuga Promenade Regeneration Project Announced
Jan 22 2025 Share

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the €12 million Birżebbuġa Promenade Regeneration Project, managed by the Department of Public Works.

With input from University of Malta students from the Faculty for the Built Environment, the designs are finalized, and the application process for construction is underway.

Spanning over 1.5 kilometres, the project will introduce five open spaces—both new and regenerated—upgraded gardens and playgrounds, an underground public parking facility, pedestrian zones, and a dedicated cycling lane. Sustainable materials will also enhance the promenade.

During a visit to Birżebbuġa, Abela emphasised the government’s commitment to investing in projects that improve communities.

He referenced the closure of the 31st March fuel storage plant, which significantly reduced emissions and heavy vehicle traffic, and highlighted local investments like the water polo pitch and Bengħajsa Park. He stressed the importance of leveraging Malta’s economic growth to deliver quality-of-life projects for residents.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett described the project as part of broader urban regeneration efforts, such as the Buġibba square and Msida Creek initiatives.

He highlighted the inclusion of cycling lanes and pedestrian-priority zones, emphasising the government’s focus on sustainable mobility and improved urban spaces.

Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia underlined the project’s goal to provide residents with a recreational space while addressing the historical challenges the locality faced due to industrial expansion.
