English traveller coming to Malta fined €500 for falsifying vaccine certificate

An English passenger travelling from Gatwick to Malta has been fine €500 after presenting a fake COVID-19 vaccine certificate belonging to his mother. The traveller attempted to pass through airport security as if the certificate was his.

It was when the English-born traveller disembarked the aircraft that he was spotted by airport officials suspecting that something was wrong with his certificate. He was later arrested by the police and admitted that he falsified the documents, going on to reveal that he had only received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

He was then taken to court and fined €500, with legal aid Daniel Attard appearing for the accused.

Real Madrid increase confidence in signing Kylian Mbappe this summer and PSG identify his replacement

Real Madrid have reportedly increased their €160 million offer for PSG striker Kylian Mbappe to an offer of around €180 million. It is said that PSG are now more willing to deal with the Spanish side.

The deal has been slowly progressing ever since Mbappe told PSG his desire to play for Los Blancos and since Real Madrid upped their offer to one of €170 million plus a bonus of €10 million. Reports in England are saying that once the deal finalizes the French superstar will either take Ferland Mendy’s 23 number or choose the number 5, Zinedine Zidane’s old Real Madrid number.

Reports not only in France but also in England have stated that PSG’s target to replace Kylian Mbappe is Brazilian Everton striker Richarlison. The Brazilian striker won’t come cheap considering his contract expires in 2024. No price tag has been set on Richarlison, but considering he’s in his prime and his contract doesn’t expire anytime soon, the deal could be worth up to £100 million.

40 COVID-19 cases registered overnight with 66 recoveries

Malta has registered 40 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 3,411 swab tests, while 66 patients have recovered. One death was registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Thursday 26th August 2021, 794,531 vaccine doses were administered of which 412,605 were 1st doses. 411,422 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 35,990 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 34,513 have recovered, 439 died and 642 are still active.

Mater Dei Hospital is currently treating a total of 29 COVID-19 positive patients, two of whom are in the ITU.

Santa Marija break COVID-19 spike ‘unlikely’ as cases plateau

Despite concerns of a spike of COVID-19 cases following the Santa Marija break, medical sources have reported that a spike is unlikely.

Back in May, Superintendent for Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci had told Times of Malta that the authorities were ready to tackle any local surge in cases but two weeks later, COVID-19 cases have reached a plateau, with a spike being unlikely.

Sources have confirmed that the Delta, which is the most dominant in the country, is more contagious than the previous; all while Malta maintains its promisingly high vaccination rate.
