English Overtakes Maltese as the Most Spoken Language in Malta, Survey Finds

In a recent survey conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), it has been revealed that English has surpassed Maltese as the most widely spoken language among the local population.

Remarkably, a staggering 96% of people in Malta feel comfortable speaking English, slightly higher than the 90% who are proficient in Maltese. Additionally, Italian has a stronger presence than anticipated, with a significant 62% of respondents reporting an understanding of the language.

The survey, which interviewed 130,000 individuals between the ages of 15 and 64, not only shed light on language preferences but also uncovered a diverse range of skills prevalent within the community.

Interestingly, language preferences seem to be influenced by age, with older individuals gravitating towards Italian and Arabic, while younger generations lean towards French and German.

The survey delved further into various skill categories, revealing impressive technological prowess within Malta.

Man Wanted by Police Claims Lack of Notification for Court Sitting

A man who was wanted by the police has come forward, stating that neither he nor his lawyers were informed of a court sitting pertaining to his case.

Ryan Dimech, a self-employed truck driver, claimed to have only been made aware of the pending court case when a ‘wanted statement’ was issued by the police.

The situation unfolded when the police issued a wanted notice for Dimech on Friday, regarding the pending court case.

In response, Dimech took to Facebook and posted a photo of himself, vehemently denying any accusations of theft or harm against him or his country.

This morning, a recent update from the police indicated that the person in question, Dimech, is no longer wanted.

The police clarified that contrary to some media reports, the individual had initially been notified to appear in court. However, as he failed to attend the hearing, an arrest warrant was issued by the presiding magistrate.

After facing difficulties in locating him, the police resorted to issuing a notice in the media to expedite his identification and continue with the case, ensuring the interests of the victim are safeguarded.

England Display Attacking Prowess with Dominant Win over Malta

England showcased their formidable attacking prowess in a commanding performance, securing a resounding victory against Malta in the Euro 2024 Group C match. The Three Lions dominated the game from the start, scoring three goals within the first 30 minutes to solidify their position at the top of the group.

Gareth Southgate’s team exhibited their clinical finishing ability, punishing every slight mistake made by the Maltese side. The opening goal came courtesy of an unfortunate own goal by Ferdinando Apap, setting England on their path to victory. The scoring continued with a spectacular strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold and a confidently converted penalty by the prolific forward Harry Kane. In the dying moments of the game, England substitute Callum Wilson sealed the emphatic win by converting a penalty awarded through VAR intervention. Wilson sent Bonello the wrong way, capping off a comfortable and dominant performance by the English side.

With this win, England maintained their perfect record in the group stage, reaching the nine-point mark and firmly securing their position at the summit of Group C. On the contrary, Malta remained at the bottom of the group, yet to collect a single point from three matches. They now face a challenging away trip against Ukraine in Slovakia, hoping to bounce back quickly from this defeat.

While Malta’s defeat was not unexpected against the talented English squad, their failure to register a single shot on target raises concerns about their effectiveness in the attacking third. Coach Marcolini must address this issue to improve their chances of securing points in the remaining matches.

New Zealand blockbuster star Russell Crowe is back in Malta, ahead of his band’s concert on Saturday.

The Russell Crowe’s Indoor Garden Party will perform in St. George’s Square Valletta on Saturday evening ahead of the Mediterrane Film Festival’s opening.

Maltese Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo took to Facebook to share his enthusiasm in welcoming Crowe back to Malta, posting a snap of himself alongside Crowe and Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech.

The Mediterrane Film Festival will run from June 25th to June 30th, welcoming filmmakers, enthusiasts, industry professional and special guests from all across the Mediterranean to celebrate the platform.
