“Monster” Nun Allegedly Abused Children At Lourdes Home, Għajnsielem

2 Women Testify On Severe Abuse By Nuns At Lourdes Home
Jan 16 2024 Share

In a constitutional case against the State, survivors detailed harrowing abuse at the Church-operated Lourdes Home in Għajnsielem, managed by the Dominican Sisters.

Testimonies from two women outlined sexual abuse, severe beatings, and mistreatment by the nuns, including instances of isolation and constant fear.

One of the women recounted being coerced into inappropriate activities with a priest by Sister Josephine, while the other described Sister Josephine as a “monster” and revealed exposure to indecent acts during confession.

The survivors are pursuing compensation from the state and highlighted communication gaps, such as one of the women discovering her mother’s death two years late. The revelations exposed the destruction of files and documents related to their time at the home, raising concerns about accountability and justice.

The alleged abuse at Għajnsielem home spans decades, acknowledged by the Church in 1999, but gaining public attention in 2006. Despite a Church commission finding evidence of misconduct, subsequent inquiries faced denial and closed cases.

Survivors faced challenges in exposing the abuse, including denied access to medical files and document destruction. Investigations ensued, with a 2011 police probe into abuse claims against two nuns from Lourdes Home. The survivors’ pursuit of justice and acknowledgment is set to continue, with the case resuming in March.

Lionel Messi secured the FIFA Best Men’s Player award in a closely contested battle with Erling Haaland, relying on a tiebreaker based on first-place votes from national team captains.

Despite both players accumulating 48 points, Messi’s 107-64 lead in captain votes secured his victory. Messi, now with Inter Miami after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, played a pivotal role in their Leagues Cup triumph, marking his impact on U.S. soccer.

Aitana Bonmati, the 25-year-old Spanish playmaker, claimed FIFA’s best women’s football player title, adding to her impressive collection of accolades, including the Ballon d’Or. Bonmati led Spain to World Cup glory and Barcelona to the Champions League title, earning recognition as the player of the tournament for both competitions.

Pep Guardiola was named the best men’s coach, steering Manchester City to a historic treble. Meanwhile, England coach Sarina Wiegman received the women’s coaching prize for guiding the Lionesses to the World Cup final.

Messi’s eighth FIFA award in 15 years came after a season where he led Argentina to World Cup success and made a significant impact in the MLS with Inter Miami.

The voting process highlighted fan support for Messi, journalist favoritism towards Haaland, and crucial backing from national team captains for the Argentine star. The eligibility period excluded the World Cup, focusing on achievements from after the tournament until August 20.
