Malta’s Nepalese community is working to raise funds and cover repatriation expenses to send Ajay Shestha’s body back home.

Shestha, 28-years-old, was tragically killed when a truck overturned and hit a light pole which in turn struck the young man who was working as a food-courier on a motorcycle.

The Nepalese community in Malta, joined by many Bolt and Wolt couriers, will be donating a day’s salary to help repatriate Shestha’s body back to Nepal.

The Malta Cricket Association will also be organising a cricket match on Saturday, with the proceeds all going directly towards the expenses. Another event, this time a football tournament, will be held on Sunday 27th March in Msida to help raise events.

Anyone else who wishes to help finance the expenses can donate by visiting the link gogetfunding.com/tribute-to-ajay or by contacting the Non-Residence Nepali Association Malta to give a cash donation.

Sadness KC, President of the Nepalese People’s Relations Committee, told newsroom MaltaToday that the Nepalese community has been humbled by the solidarity it has seen after Shrestha’s death.

He however went on to point out that many Hindus in Malta are unable to cremate loved ones as is custom in their faith. Malta legalised cremation in 2019, but no crematorium has been built since then.

MaltaToday also received an official statement by food delivery company Bolt which stated how saddened it is by the news and that it is in touch with Shrestha’s family in Malta.

Shestha starting working in Malta as a waiter, going on to become a food delivery courier when the pandemic hit.
