Eleanor Bezzina concludes Olympic journey with a 41st place finish

Earlier today, local trap shooter Eleanor Bezzina concluded her Olympic journey. Her last event in Tokyo was the rapid round of the 25m range qualification where she scored 276 points. Eleanor scored 289 points in the precision round, a total which at the time put her in 17th position. She ended up with 565 points, which meant that she finished in 41st place. Her points tally slightly increased from the 562 points she managed in the 2016 Olympics, but she finished in 36th that time around.

Eleanor Bezzina, who also has two gold and one silver medal in the Games of the Small States of Europe, has been ever present in the Maltese Olympic scene ever since 2016. This year she participated in two shooting events and in both she made her country proud with a 26th place finish in the 10m and a 41st place finish in the 25m range, she also was chosen to be a flag bearer in the opening ceremony.

Carla Scicluna makes it to next Tokyo 2020 Olympics round after stunning performance

After placing fourth in her 100-metre heat, Maltese track and field athlete Carla Scicluna will be advancing to the next round in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Registering a time of 12.11 seconds in the preliminary round, Scicluna came in just one place behind Alvin Tehupeiory from Indonesia. Her results were high enough to warrant a place in the next round.

This makes Scicluna the only Maltese athlete to have qualified past preliminary rounds at the 2020 Olympics. Carla will be bringing her athletic prowess once again in the Heat Five of Round One of the women’s 100-metres which will take place at 12:47 pm (5:47 am local time). Well done Carla!

“Our fight is not over”; Activists call for justice & resignations at Castille Square

Multiple civil society and activist groups such as Repubblika, Occupy Justice and Moviment Graffitti, amongst others, took to Castille square this evening to protest following Daphne Caruana Galizia’s public inquiry report calling for the state to shoulder responsibility after enabling a culture of impunity.

“Our fight is not over. Today’s conclusions signal another chapter in our struggle for justice”, writer & activist Manuel Delia stated as he joined his fellow activists in a call for justice under The Auberge de Castille.

Repubblika President Robert Aquilina stated that the NGO will be insisting that all ministers, officials and persons of trust bear responsibility for the report’s conclusions and laid down several demands following the report’s publication, including an apology and compensation to the Caruana Galizia Family.

Abela offers compensation to Caruana Galizia family; Muscat reacts

Following the publishing of the public inquiry report revolving around the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed a press conference where he publicly apologised for the state’s shortcomings and indirect contribution to the assassination of the journalist.

During the conference, Abela invited the Caruana Galizia family to a meeting and mentioned the possibility, if required, of compensation as part of the reconciliation process.

The inquiry report highlighted that the State should shoulder responsibility for Caruana Galizia’s murder due to the cultivation of a culture of impunity from the highest echelons of power in Castille, also recommending that the state takes steps into regulating the links between politics and big business.

In a Facebook post reacting to the inquiry report published on Thursday, former prime minister Joseph Muscat highlighted his reservations on the public inquiry, highlighting the statement that “the state had no knowledge beforehand, or involvement in the assassination”.

Muscat also highlighted that the report ‘unequivocally declares’ that Muscat was in no way implicated in the murder.
