Elderly Woman Reportedly Killed After Being Hit By Car

A pedestrian has been reportedly killed after being hit by a car in Ħal Qormi this afternoon.

According to reports by police speaking with Times of Malta, the accident took place at 1345hrs at Triq L-Isqof Scicluna, Qormi.

Reports indicate that the victim is an elderly woman. More information is set to be communicated.

This comes after it was revealed that a 40 year old Indian national died after a van on truck crash in Ħaż Żebbuġ, making this the second road fatality of the day.

Italy Remains Malta’s Most Popular Outbound Destination

A recent research study conducted by the National Statistics Office revealed that Italy continues to be the most favored destination among Maltese outbound tourists.

According to the data, a significant 39.3% of all tourist trips taken by Maltese individuals and families between April and June 2024 were to Italy, solidifying its status as the top choice for travelers.

During this quarter, a total of 189,404 Maltese residents traveled abroad, a number closely mirroring the volume of outbound trips recorded in the same period in 2023.

The majority of these journeys, approximately 122,825, were made for holiday and relaxation purposes, reflecting the strong desire among Maltese people to unwind and explore new destinations. Meanwhile, 37,978 trips were taken with the primary purpose of visiting friends and relatives living abroad.

The study also highlighted a shift in travel patterns, with outbound trips to EU countries experiencing a slight decrease of 1.6% compared to 2023.

In contrast, travel to non-EU destinations saw an increase of 5.5%, indicating a growing interest in exploring countries outside the European Union.

Overall, the first half of 2024 witnessed a total of 368,398 outbound tourist trips by Maltese residents, marking a 6% increase compared to the first half of 2023.

40 Year Old Dies After Haz Zebbug Van On Truck Collision

This morning, at around 1000hrs, police were informed that an accident had taken place in Triq l-Imdina, Ħaż-Żebbuġ.

Preliminary investigations showed that a crash between an Isuzu ELF van driven by a 40 year old Indian resident of Ħamrun and a DAF truck driven by a 61 year old man resident of Ħal Tarxien had taken place.

A few moments later after the incident, Civil Protection Department officers arrived on site. An ambulance took the Isuzu driver to Mater Dei but he unfortunately lost his life a few moments later.

An inquiry has been opened and police are continuing their investigations.
