Edward Scicluna will no longer serve on the Malta Finance Services Authority, the Prime Minister announced on Thursday during an interview with Newsbook’s chief editor Matthew Xuereb.
This announcement comes a day after the court confirmed that the case involving him in the Vitals hospitals scandal will proceed to trial.
“A decision had to be made, and it was made today. A notice will be published in the Government Gazette tomorrow,” Abela stated during an interview with Matthew Xuereb at a Labour Party event.
Scicluna has been under significant pressure to step down from his positions as both the governor of the Central Bank and as a director of the MFSA following his arraignment and charges of misappropriation in the Vitals Hospitals case. He maintains his innocence.
On Wednesday, Abela commended Scicluna for his integrity but suggested that he should also resign as governor.
Despite the mounting pressure, Scicluna remained resolute, asserting on Thursday that the governor of the Central Bank operates independently and adheres to European Union regulations.
Abela expressed his hope that Scicluna would make the best decision for the country before the Cabinet’s meeting next Tuesday. He was confident that Scicluna would act in the nation’s best interests by then.
