The Faculty of Education has voiced strong concerns over a recent directive from the Directorate for Education, which restricts educators’ participation in media. The Faculty argues that such limitations infringe upon educators’ right to free speech, undermining their role in promoting democratic principles and active citizenship.
In a statement, faculty members emphasised that educators play a vital role in fostering critical thinking and inclusivity, which are central to democratic education. Silencing educators on crucial issues, such as inclusive education and curriculum reform, not only deprives the public of experienced perspectives but also stifles necessary discourse for the advancement of educational practices.
The Faculty fears these restrictions may have a chilling effect, discouraging educators from engaging publicly due to concerns over professional consequences. They warn that curtailing educators’ voices risks hindering educational progress and limits their capacity to influence policy and promote democratic engagement.
The Faculty of Education has urged the Directorate to reconsider its policy and support an environment where educators feel empowered to share their expertise for the common good.
