Maltese fans packed the Eden cinemas to watch the world premier of “Deep Fear” in Malta as well as to meet some of the big stars of the film.

These included “Gossip Girl” star Ed Westwick, who is best known for his role as Chuck Bass in the popular drama.

He was joined by Madeline Ghenea, a multi-talented model and actress who has worked in both Hollywood and European cinema, as well as Macarena Gomez.

The latter is an award winning Spanish actress with countless roles in film and television. “Deep Fear” was produced by Sean O’Kelly and Mark Bikindou, and directed by Marcus Adams.

“Deep Fear” sees Ghenea star as accomplished yachtswoman Naomi who embarks on a solo trip through the Caribbean to meet her boyfriend Jackson (played by Westwick) in Grenada.

The event of course coincides with the Mediterrane Film Festival as it celebrates the blooming of the film industry in the Maltese islands by attracting high level talent to further boost Malta’s role in the sector.

According to a report from the United Nations, the use of cocaine and the production of the drug is at an all time high.

The World Drug Report 2023 found that there were around 22 million people who used cocaine in 2021, which is an increase from the previous 21 million of 2020.

Meanwhile, coca bush cultivation increased by 234,200 hectares in 2020 to around 315,000 hectares the following year.

Despite the increase, the seizure of cocaine outpaced production as 2021 saw around 2,026 tons. With a steady rise since 2015, the report claims that the world is ‘currently experiencing a prolonged surge in both supply and demand of cocaine.’

This is ‘now being felt across the globe and is likely to spur the development of new markets beyond the traditional confines’.

The Americas as well as both Western and Central Europe dominate the market, but Africa, Asia and Southeastern Europe are also seeing an increase in the drug.
