Ed Sheeran Helps Ipswich Town Seal Key Signing

Ed Sheeran Helps Ipswich Town Seal Key Signing
Nov 22 2024 Share

Mark Ashton, the chief executive of Ipswich Town, has disclosed that Ed Sheeran was unexpectedly involved in the club’s summer hiring. Shortly before taking the stage with Taylor Swift, the international pop sensation and little club shareholder allegedly participated in a video conversation to persuade a new recruit to commit to the squad.

Ashton made a suggestion that the player is “certainly scoring a few goals” and is a Sheeran fan, but he did not identify the player. “Ed jumped on a Zoom call at the training ground, just before performing with Taylor Swift,” Ashton stated during the Soccerex business event in Miami. That should have been crucial in completing the transaction.

The profile appears to be fulfilled by Sammie Szmodics, who signed from Blackburn the day following Sheeran and Swift’s performance at Wembley on August 15. Recently, Szmodics scored an overhead kick during Ipswich’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham. He shared a picture of himself with Sheeran on Instagram with the message, “Overhead kick, win & a smudge with big Ed.” GO IN THERE.

Ashton cracked a joke. “Officially, Sheeran is now a member of our recruitment team.” Sheeran, who has been a frequent visitor at Portman Road since 2021, when he became the club’s jersey sponsor, will be at Ipswich’s match against Manchester United on Sunday.

Malta will face Luxembourg in the UEFA Nations League C/D playoffs, as determined by the draw in Nyon, Switzerland, on November 22, 2024. Luxembourg earned their spot as one of the best fourth-placed teams from League C.

In Group C3, Luxembourg competed against Northern Ireland, Bulgaria, and Belarus, finishing with three points from draws against each opponent.

Northern Ireland topped the group with 11 points, followed by Bulgaria (9) and Belarus (7). Despite failing to secure a win, Luxembourg proved resilient in a competitive group.

Malta and Luxembourg have a long history, meeting seven times previously in friendlies and European Qualifiers.

Luxembourg has typically dominated, but Malta has recorded two wins and two draws. Their latest encounter on June 9, 2023, ended in Malta’s favour, with Kyrian Nwoko scoring the only goal for a 1-0 victory on foreign soil.

The playoff will be contested over two legs: the first in Malta on March 26, 2026, and the second in Luxembourg on March 31, 2026.

The winner on aggregate will secure a spot in League C for the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League, while the loser will remain in League D. The stakes are high, as both teams aim to advance in the competition.

Bernard Grech, the leader of the Nationalist Party (PN), stated the party’s dedication to democracy and the rule of law at the European People’s Party (EPP) Political Assembly, which was hosted at the PN Headquarters on November 21–22 for the first time in Malta.

Grech emphasised several of Europe’s most pressing issues, such as migration, economic strains, climate change, and digital transformation. He praised the thousands-strong rally staged by PN and denounced recent local corruption. EPP President Manfred Weber emphasised the value of helping middle-class families and acknowledged Malta’s significant influence in the EU through Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament.

The Assembly heard speeches from Georgian MP George Tsereteli, who spoke about political instability in Georgia, and former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who emphasised the effects of the war and asked for Ukraine to join NATO.

Dubravka Šuica, the incoming Commissioner for the Mediterranean, pushed for a Pact for the Mediterranean at talks that focused on the geopolitical issues, migration, and climate disaster facing the Mediterranean region. The balance between environmental sustainability and economic growth was discussed by PN Secretary General Michael Piccinino and George Vital Zammit.

Grech met with Šuica and Morocco’s Minister Delegate Mustafa Baitas in bilateral discussions during the event, which ends with Metsola and Weber’s addresses.
