€7,000 fine for contractor after worker was injured due to lack of safety

After a worker as seriously injured at a workplace due to lack of health and safety regulations, the director of the company in charge was fined €7,000 for failing to provide the necessary precautions.

The director was also found guilty of failing to provide and risking the lives of people who could have been affected by the work being done.

The incident happened in September of 2014, with Magistrate Simone Grech ruling that the director also failed to ensure a proper risk assessment of all dangers that could have been present at the workplace.

As an operator and employer he was also found guilty of failing to take the necessary measures to avoid dangerous situations such as falls from a height and other.

He also failed to make sure that work at a certain height is carried out only with special equipment or with the use of collective protection equipment such as platforms or safety net.

The court ruled that at various times there were no suitable means of access and safety harnesses or any form of safety anchoring methods. He was also found guilty of not securing access to first aid to employees in case of injuries.

Costa Foundation & Sigma Foundation collaborating to supply Ethiopian schools with water reservoirs

Costa Coffee Malta and The Sigma Foundation will be collaborating with the Costa Foundation to raise funds to provide two Ethiopian schools with water conservation equipment.

Back in May 2022, Costa Coffee Malta CEO Christina Galea and Sigma Foundation founder Keith Marshall participated in an expedition to Santiago de Compostela to raise funds for the building of a school in Bonga Ethiopia. The idea of bringing foundations together was born from the purpose of providing education to the less fortunate, which countries also happen to be coffee growing communities which Costa wishes to support and ensure sustainability.

One school in Wote has already been upgraded by the Costa Foundation and requires a water reservoir of 5m3, which water will help over 1400 students and teachers and will cost $2,461.

The second project is for Adeyi school, which includes 2 water tanks for the school and community, 5 water points, 1 new spring, 7km of pipeline and 7 WASHCo members training with total beneficiaries amounting to 7,538. An additional two concrete reservoirs will cost $7,000.

The funds will be raised through various activities being organised by Costa Coffee Malta as part of their ten year anniversary celebrations in October which also include 10% of revenues from all cappuccino sales to be donated to the fund during the events, a Harry Potter Quiz night, football tournament and team BBQ sponsored by the Costa management team.

Aviation industry growing rapidly says Infrastructure Minister

Speaking at the Malta Aviation Conference & EXPO (MACE), Infrastructure and Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia stated that the local aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth and interest.

Another five Aircraft Operating Certificates are set to be added by autumn with the registry also currently exceeding 700 aircraft. This number is set to spike up to 800 by 2023.

Various delegates from all over the world meet up for the annual international aviation conference MACE held in Malta.

Offering a platform for investors and other aviation professionals to meet with local service providers, the attendees and delegates are decision makers in their respective organisations.

Minister Aaron Farrugia highlighted how the industry is creating various quality jobs for various people and that the government is working to ensure that aviation is recognised as a main player in the local economy.

He also focused on how Malta needs to defend local interests against the one size fits all attitude given that Malta is an island on the periphery of the EU.

Chief Executive Officer for Transport Malta Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi said that the authority’s vision is to keep growing by bringing in more companies in a sustainable fashion.

Half-Maltese brothers to perform on The Voice UK this weekend!

Two half-Maltese brothers and singers are set to make a massive step in their musical journey as they audition for the UK version of The Voice.

The duo, comprised of Matthew and Daniel, will be showing off their talent to a judging panel comprised of Olly Murs, Anne-Marie, Will.i.am and Tom Jones – and not to mention a massive television audience.

The brothers unveiled the news on their socials, stating that fans of their work can watch their official performance this Saturday October 8th on ITV.

‘From our first times stepping on stage together at 14 to the biggest performance of our lives’ said the pair, understandably excited about their latest opportunity.

We’ll have to see what happens during their round and whether any of the judges will hit that red button to bring them into the fold. But the two brothers, who also founded ‘The Playground’ for other artists to grow, have honed their skills to make a definite imprint.
