€5 Million Investment For Fisheries Innovation Hub

Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Welfare, Alicia Bugeja Said, visited the Fish Market to see the progress of the infrastructural works underway, including the installation of two new ice machines which will help improve the quality and preservation of fresh fish.

Parliamentary Secretary emphasised that this investment continues to enhance the operation of the Fish Market. “The installation of the ice machines is another example of how we are directly addressing the needs of fishermen. This Government is strengthening the facility’s capacity to provide a better, more efficient and sustainable service.”

During the visit, the Parliamentary Secretary also viewed the ongoing works at the Fisheries Innovation Hub, which is being developed with a total investment of €5 million and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The same hub will host the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

“The Government remains committed to continuing to invest in infrastructure and innovation to ensure a healthy future for this sector, which is crucial to our country’s economy,” said the Parliamentary Secretary, while thanking Chief Executive Brian Vella and the staff as well as the fishermen for their ongoing cooperation, stressing that the Fish Market remains a key element in the Maltese fishing value chain.

Malta With 2nd Highest Expenditure Per Night By Visiting EU Residents

Malta has the second highest average spending per night by visitors from European Union countries. In 2023, EU residents visiting Malta spent around €150 each night during their trips.

Eurostat, the European statistics office, revealed that only Finland saw higher spending, with visitors spending an average of €164 per night. At the other end of the scale, countries such as Slovakia and Romania had much lower spending. Visitors to Slovakia spent about €71 per night, while in Romania, the average was €80 per night.

Tourism plays a key role in Malta’s economy, and these figures confirm the island’s continued popularity among EU visitors.

Malta With 3rd Highest Employment Rate For Men With Children

Malta registered the third highest employment rate for men with children living in the household in 2024 in the EU.

Last year, the employment rate for men with kids in the household was 91.9%, whereas for men without children it was 83.9%.

Malta registered in third place at 96.1%, after Czechia and Slovenia at 96.7% and 96.3%.

The lowest rate was registered in Romania at 87.7%, followed by Spain and Luxembourg at 87.8% and 89.5%.

Fgura United F.C. has proudly appointed the late Jake Vella as an Honorary Member during its Annual General Meeting, held on Father’s Day.

Club president Larkin Bonnici announced the unanimous decision, describing it as a tribute to Jake’s courageous and inspiring spirit, which left a lasting impact on countless children and families.

Jake’s parents, Josie Vella and Mariska Vella, accepted the honour on his behalf.

“This Father’s Day, Jake still found a way to bring me joy,” said his father. “Thanks to Larkin Bonnici and Fgura United F.C. for nominating Jake as an honorary member, allowing him to continue inspiring many children and youths.”

The club explained that this heartfelt recognition is intended to ensure that Jake’s memory continues to motivate and uplift future generations.

His name now joins that of the late Dr Victor Calvagna, who had also been honoured by the club shortly before his passing.
