Cheques totaling over €4 million, issued by the government last May under the tax refund scheme, remain uncashed, according to Finance Minister Clyde Caruana.

Responding to a parliamentary question from Nationalist MP Jerome Caruana Cilia, Caruana explained that the uncashed cheques are part of a procedure started in 2018 to annually compensate workers, with the highest compensation given to the lowest earners.

The infrastructure project on Triq il-Marfa leading to the Ċirkewwa Terminal has been completed. The project aimed to better organize and facilitate traffic around the terminal by establishing a continuous lane for cars heading to Gozo from the Armier roundabout.

Infrastructure Malta also conducted necessary maintenance during the project. With a €7 million investment, the project ensures better access for workers, public transport, and emergency vehicles, without closing access to the terminal.

This upgrade addresses the traffic congestion of the past 13 years, which affected public and emergency services.

Minister Chris Bonett emphasised the project’s success in reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the area’s infrastructure, benefiting all users. The project spans 2.5 kilometres and includes new safety structures, improved lighting, and expanded cyclist lanes.

The work, started in mid-February, was completed as promised before the summer season. The new design of the road eliminates cross-traffic and includes a new lighting system and increased safety measures.

Cyclists were also considered, with the expansion of certain areas of the existing bike lane from the Marfa roundabout to Ċirkewwa. The project began in mid-February and was completed as promised before the start of the summer season.

Kylian Mbappe scored a pivotal penalty for France in their Group D clash against Poland at Euro 2024.

Mbappe’s goal, which came in the 56th minute after Ousmane Dembele was fouled in the penalty box, marked his first-ever goal in a European Championship.

Despite his injury setbacks, including a broken nose that kept him benched in the previous match against the Netherlands, Mbappe confidently converted the spot-kick while wearing a protective mask.

France’s encounter with Poland ended in a 1-1 draw after Robert Lewandowski equalised with a penalty 11 minutes from time. Lewandowski’s initial shot was saved, but he scored on the retake after the French goalkeeper moved off the line prematurely.

With this result and Austria’s simultaneous victory over the Netherlands, France finished second in Group D, securing one win and two draws. They advance to the Round of 16, set to face the runners-up of Group E, which could be Belgium, Romania, Slovakia, or Ukraine.

France’s coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged the team’s achievement of qualifying but emphasized the need for improvement as they head into the knockout stages. Despite not topping their group, France remains in strong contention, poised to compete against top teams like Portugal, Spain, and Germany in the upcoming rounds.
