Following the Department of Public Works’ consideration of rebuilding the Waterpolo pool in Birżebbuġa, the project is now advancing with the construction of a new pump room within the same complex. This addition will utilize modern technology to enhance water purification, enabling year-round use of the pool, including during the winter months. Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia made these remarks during the signing of an agreement between the Department of Public Works and the Birżebbuġa Waterpolo Club.
The Parliamentary Secretary highlighted the significant investment in this sports facility. He noted that the previous pool had been inactive for several years and required more than routine maintenance to meet acceptable standards. Consequently, the Department of Public Works took on the challenge of this ambitious project, reconstructing a pool with purified water to provide a new venue for the country’s residents to engage in swimming and water polo.
“Through this agreement, we are not only addressing these issues but also providing modern facilities for the club’s youth, allowing them to train in a pool that remains usable even during the winter months at cooler temperatures. This project is part of a series of initiatives in our communities aimed at improving the quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan families,” continued the Parliamentary Secretary.
The investment in a new pump room will accommodate an advanced system for water treatment, ensuring efficient operation. Additionally, a covering will be installed to enclose the pool when not in use, preventing heat loss and enhancing efficiency.
Jason Bonnici, President of the Birżebbuġa Waterpolo Club, expressed gratitude to the government for its support in this endeavor. He emphasized that the upgraded pool will be available year-round, and the investment will attract more youth to participate in swimming and water polo within the club.
