Responding to a question tabled in parliament, Minister Byron Camilleri revealed that €3.25 million is spent every year for food for Corradino Correctional Facility.

This, the Minister said, comprises not just the expense of the contractor who provides the daily food, but even the buying of other items like fruit.

As of February 2025, there were 724 inmates at Corradino Correctional Facility. 665 of these were reported to have been men, whereas 59 were women.

One needs to keep in mind, the Minister said, that the amount of prisoners changes continuously.

The Minister also revealed that the food arrives half cooked from the contractor and the rest takes place in prison so that the food is served fresh.

Dietary and medical restrictions are also taken into consideration, with fruit being served three times a week.

The type of food is inspected by prison directors before it is served.

Jerry Ghigo, a resident of Mqabba, appeared in court on Monday before Magistrate Charmaine Galea, facing several charges including assault, threatening and insulting police, refusing to obey lawful orders, public drunkenness, and damaging police property — including a police motorcycle and an officer’s uniform.

According to prosecuting officer Inspector Andrew Agius Bonello, Police Sergeant Luke Grima was driving in the direction of Ta’ Kandja when he encountered a truck carrying fans celebrating the team’s success. It was during this encounter that the alleged assault took place.

Ghigo pleaded not guilty to all charges.

New Changes To Strengthen Regulation Of Malta’s Cannabis Law

New Changes To Close Loopholes In Malta's Cannabis Law
Apr 8 2025 Share

The Maltese government has proposed several changes to the cannabis law to improve enforcement, clarify definitions, and provide legal certainty.

Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg announced the amendments during the second reading of the reform bill in Parliament, stating that the goal remains to reduce harm and strengthen regulation.

One major change would mean that offences committed by cannabis associations will now be heard before a Magistrates’ Court instead of the Commissioner for Justice tribunal, reflecting the serious nature of such offences. Individual users will not be affected by this shift.

The amendments also aim to clarify what counts as cannabis under Maltese law. The legal definition will now explicitly include both THC and CBD, while excluding non-psychoactive cannabinoids with less than 0.2% THC.

This change is designed to block synthetic or semi-synthetic substances—like HHC—from entering the market.

The Authority for the Responsible Use of Cannabis (ARUC) will be granted broader powers to enforce regulations and advise the Minister on new substances.

Cannabis associations will face stricter rules, including a minimum distance of 250 metres from schools, sports facilities, and youth centres. Fines for allowing minors on-site could rise to €10,000.

The opposition Nationalist Party expressed support for tougher enforcement but criticised the original law’s rollout, calling it rushed and poorly implemented.
