Doomsday Clock Moves One Second Closer To Midnight

The Doomsday Clock has been moved one second closer to midnight. It now stands at 89 seconds, the closest it has ever been to signalling humanity’s potential destruction.

The clock, created in 1947, was initially set at seven minutes to midnight but has steadily advanced as global threats have intensified. Last year, it remained at 90 seconds.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which sets the clock annually, stressed the urgency for global action to address these dangers, with nuclear tensions, AI weaponisation, and the worsening effects of climate change putting the world at a precarious tipping point.

In its statement, the BAS warned “This is a stark signal to world leaders and citizens that global security is at increasing risk.”

As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the message is clear: immediate and concerted efforts are needed to avoid disaster.

Maltese MEP Thomas Bajada Releases EU Water Efficiency Draft Report

Feb 1 2025 Share

Maltese MEP Thomas Bajada (S&D) has called on the European Commission to introduce a dedicated funding line for water resilience in the next multi-annual financial framework.

Bajada, who was tasked by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee with drafting an own-initiative report on the issue, insists that an EU-wide water strategy cannot succeed without ad hoc funding.

His draft report, published on 30 January, outlines the need for financial support to modernise infrastructure, develop innovative technologies, enhance data collection, and implement nature-based solutions.

The strategy should also ensure compliance with EU legislative obligations while addressing regional disparities and assisting economically disadvantaged areas.

Bajada emphasises that investments in water resilience must involve public-private partnerships to maximise efficiency and impact.

His report highlights the urgency of a comprehensive EU approach to water security, particularly in the face of climate change and increasing demand.

With growing concerns over droughts, pollution, and water management inefficiencies, Bajada’s proposals set the stage for a wider debate on the EU’s long-term strategy.

The Commission is now expected to assess his recommendations and consider their inclusion in future funding frameworks.

New Open Space For Siggiewi In Ta Ramija Area
Jan 31 2025 Share

A once barren and underutilized area in Ta’ Ramija, Siġġiewi, has been revitalised into a lush green space for the local community.

With an investment of over €250,000 and the dedicated work of the Public Works Department, the transformation included planting 14 trees, 242 shrubs, and 2,100 new plants across the site.

The project also introduced a modern irrigation system, enhanced security features, improved lighting, new outdoor furniture, and extensive landscaping to create a welcoming and sustainable environment.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works, Omar Farrugia, joined by Former President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and Siġġiewi Mayor Julian Borg, described the initiative as more than just an aesthetic improvement.

“This project is a testament to the government’s commitment to expanding public spaces for the benefit of residents,” Farrugia stated.

He further emphasised that investing in open spaces fosters a more inclusive society, ensuring that progress benefits the entire country. “This space stands as a clear reminder that the community remains at the heart of all we do.”

Mayor Julian Borg also underscored the importance of this new public area, made possible through close collaboration between the Public Works Department and the local council, providing an enhanced space for all Siġġiewi residents to enjoy.
