On Friday, March 22nd, the Campus Book Fest will host a compelling event featuring Donna Darmanin’s debut poetry book. Taking place from 5pm onwards at the University of Malta quadrangle, attendees will delve into the poignant and unapologetic narrative of Darmanin’s work.

Her book offers a profound exploration of a deeply troubled domestic life, presented in the form of a confessional journal. Through vivid and at times unsettling imagery, Darmanin confronts the violence, degradation, and resentment that pervaded her past. Despite the raw vulnerability of her voice, there is an undeniable strength and self-assurance that underpins her words, rooted in profound self-awareness.

In her own reflection on the work, Darmanin describes it as an apology—an act of reconciliation with her younger self burdened by blame and shame. The book serves as a tool for healing, a means of addressing past wounds and seeking forgiveness, both from herself and from the world. As attendees immerse themselves in Darmanin’s powerful poetry, they will be invited on a journey of introspection and empathy, confronting themes of forgiveness, presence, and self-acceptance.

Dating back to the 10th century, the feast holds deep-rooted traditions and always falls during Lent. In Malta, the main festivities take place in Mdina, the former capital, where businesses typically close for the holiday.

The Biblical narrative of Joseph, detailed in the Gospels, portrays him as a devout man who initially doubted Mary’s pregnancy but was reassured by divine intervention in a dream.

He supported his family as a carpenter in Nazareth and is revered as the patron saint of carpenters in Catholicism. Saint Joseph’s story concludes in the Gospels, suggesting his passing before Jesus’ ministry.

The feast’s customs include meatless feasting, with fish as the primary protein, and the date can be adjusted to align with the Lenten and Easter calendar. Saint Joseph’s role in protecting Jesus and his family from King Herod’s wrath remains a central theme in the celebration.

The association faced the looming danger of eviction due to legal complications stemming from pre-1995 rent regulations.

Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici elucidates the ongoing efforts to safeguard band clubs facing eviction, underscoring the heightened significance of this endeavor following UNESCO’s recognition of Malta’s festa as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Minister Bonnici underscores the Government’s commitment to acting in accordance with legal and procedural norms, both in dialogue with property owners and the musical society itself.

He elaborates that upon finalization of the contract, the property will be integrated into a portfolio of premises serving as headquarters for musical societies, managed by a dedicated section within the Maltese Arts Council.

The Government’s investment for acquiring this property, once the convention materializes into a formal contract, is estimated at €2,848,700.

In total, the Ministry has secured 5 headquarters of musical societies, with 6 more under negotiation, excluding the agreement pertaining to the Għaqda tal-Mużika San Gejtanu.

Upon completion of respective acquisitions, the total investment to preserve these musical institutions will amount to €19 million.
