Does this mean St Patrick’s Day celebrations are back?

Is this the official return of St Patrick’s Day celebrations? With the announcement of the March general election came the reveal that Prime Minister Robert Abela wants Malta to return back to normal in spring.

The Prime Minister revealed that mass events will be occurring on a weekly basis as the election draws nearer and hinted at the removal of all COVID restrictions as the days go on.

Opposition leader Bernard Grech too urged the Prime Minister to remove the restrictions for all events and not just political rallies. These include everything from sports to cultural gatherings.

Given that we have not had a St Patrick’s Day celebration for 2 years now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, does this mean that lovers of beer and this special day will get to properly celebrate it again?

St Patrick’s Day in Malta is known to attract a massive crowd, especially in areas such as Malta’s entertainment Mecca Paceville. It is still quite unsure yet but indications show that such celebrations can now take place following the Prime Minister’s rallying call.

Queen Elizabeth II tests positive for COVID-19

It has just been revealed that Queen Elizabeth II has tested positive for COVID-19 and is exhibiting mild symptoms.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the monarch, who is 95-years-old, tested positive today Sunday February 20th and is expected to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week.

The statement by the palace revealed that she will continue to receive medical attention and will follow the appropriate guidelines. The Queen is not known to have previously contracted the virus, but she is vaccinated with the booster as well.

Back in October, the Queen had spent time in hospital for reasons which were not publicly confirmed. Doctors had ordered her to undertake an extended period of rest.

Having recently just celebrated 70 years on the throne, she also became the first monarch in British history to reach their Sapphire jubilee. She carried out her first major public engagement since her hospitalisation earlier this month by meeting charity workers at Sandringham House.

Malta’s waterpolo team in European finals again after beating Lithuania

For the fourth consecutive time, Malta’s national waterpolo team qualified to the last phase of the European Championships which will be held in Split, Croatia this August.

The team, coached by Karl Izzo, managed to beat Ireland in their opening match, continued to ride the wave of victory. This time around, they beat the Lithuanian team 19 to 5, making the upcoming match against Romania a formality.

This is because their win over the Lithuanians gave them the required points to move on through the championships. The initial two sessions gave the Maltese two victories, one 5-2 and another 4-3.

However, the second phase of the game saw the Maltese rising to the occasion, going to seal the deal with a 19-5 victory. Jake Muscat and Matthew Zammit were Malta’s top scorers as they landed five goals each.

Plumpton, Abela, Dino and Nikolai Zammit, Galea and Gambin netted other goals throughout the match. Well done to the whole team and good luck for the rest!

Not just political rallies: Bernard Grech calls for restriction removal

Addressing his own political event, Opposition leader Bernard Grech called for the removal of all COVID restrictions in all sectors and not just for political events.

This comes just after Prime Minister Robert Abela announcing the date for the general election – March 26th. In the Labour rally, Abela said that he wants Malta to return to full normality in spring.

This would mean that political events, which will start as of tomorrow, can take place as COVID restrictions begin to ease, with the aim of removing them all as summer approaches.

Bernard Grech stated that he expects the government under Abela’s administration to remove the restrictions from all sectors and not just political events.

This includes everything from feasts, to sports, arts and culture and even students and those wishing to see their loved ones or simply wanting to return to a life before the pandemic.
