Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V Wade on the 24th of June, giants Disney and Netflix have announced that they will cover travel expenses for employees seeking abortions.
Disney reached out to its employees to confirm that it will be extending the ‘family planning’ benefit to any worker who cannot access abortions where they live.
In a statement to the Washington Post, Disney revealed that they recognise the impact of the ruling and that they will remain committed to providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care.
With 195,000 employees worldwide, roughly 80,000 work in Florida. Meanwhile, Netflix also announced they will offer up $10,000 travel reimbursements to employees in need of gender affirming care, cancer treatment and abortion.
This move was also taken up by the likes of Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery. Meta also announced such a move but still need to work out how to do so without breaking any laws.
The Supreme Court decision overturned a 50-year-old ruling granting millions of women the legal right to abortion. The ruling could see half of the states introducing restrictions or bans, with 13 states already passing trigger laws.
