Starting October 1st, students can apply online for maintenance grants, with a deadline of December 2024 to ensure stipend eligibility from the beginning of the academic year, according to the Ministry for Education. Over 16,000 students are expected to benefit.

Education Minister Clifton Grima, during visits to Junior College and Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary, highlighted ongoing improvements in course classifications at MCAST (Level 4) and the University of Malta (Level 6) in the Maltese Qualifications Framework.

This marks the second year that more MCAST students in Level 4 courses, such as IT, Pharmacy Technicians, and Applied Science, will receive higher stipend rates. New specialisations in Industrial Electronics will also benefit from enhanced grants. Additionally, University of Malta medical students will now receive stipends under the prescribed category rather than the general category.

The Ministry also announced that students pursuing certain Bachelor of Science degrees and continuing to Master’s levels in teaching will be eligible for high-priority category grants.

This includes degrees in Biology, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and related fields.

Minister Grima emphasised that this investment in education strengthens the country’s human resource by enhancing the skills and competencies essential for the economy.

Bail Denied For Man Who Threatened To Behead Partner

Bail Denied For Man Who Threatened To Behead Partner
Oct 1 2024 Share

A 49-year-old man from Tarxien was denied bail after allegedly attacking his partner in a violent rage, court reports detail.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning when the woman returned home at 1:30 a.m. After she mentioned a “third party,” the man reportedly became enraged, grabbing her by the hair, dragging her to a balcony, and throwing objects at her, including a metal ashtray.

He allegedly made a throat-slitting gesture and threatened to behead her. The man pleaded not guilty but was denied bail due to concerns over evidence tampering and his criminal record.

The prosecutor highlighted that the man had previously refused to leave the woman’s home, despite her wanting to end the relationship. His defence lawyers argued that he had an alternative residence and presented his daughter as a potential guarantor.

However, the prosecution noted that when police visited the woman’s home, her son claimed not to know the man’s whereabouts, though the man was found hiding inside.

Magistrate Noel Bartolo rejected the bail request, citing the ongoing need for witness testimony and the severity of the charges.
